What Is HOCl? The Cleaning Molecule Your Body Already Makes

What Is HOCl? The Cleaning Molecule Your Body Already Makes

The One-Sentence Explanation

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a naturally occurring compound your immune system produces as part of its everyday function. Scientists figured out how to manufacture it at scale, and now it shows up in products used across medicine, food preparation, and home cleaning.

Where HOCl Shows Up

- Medical settings: wound irrigation and surface care
- Food preparation: widely used for produce and food-contact surfaces
- Eye care: found in certain eye drops formulated for daily comfort
- Skincare: used in products for everyday skin maintenance
- Home cleaning: the active ingredient in HOCl sprays like Rylae Kids and Rylae Active

Is It Related to Bleach?

HOCl and bleach (sodium hypochlorite) are related compounds but very different in practice. Both contain chlorine, but HOCl is far less alkaline and far less harsh. The simplest way to think about it: HOCl is what your body produces naturally. Bleach is the industrial version with dramatically higher pH and chemical concentration.

What Does "ppm" Mean on HOCl Products?

ppm stands for parts per million, which is how the concentration of HOCl in a product is measured. Consumer HOCl sprays typically run between 100 and 300 ppm. The sweet spot for everyday home use is 100 to 150 ppm, which is exactly where Rylae Kids and Rylae Active are formulated.

Science-Backed by Design

That is the Rylae Labs standard. The same molecule your body makes, formulated for the surfaces and routines that matter most.
